PMHA Virtual Study Afternoon

Following the success last summer, this year the PMHA will again hold a Virtual Study Afternoon on Thursday 15th July (on ZOOM)

The afternoon will focus on providing practical tips to manage commonly seen mental health conditions in the acute setting, as well as increasing understanding of some of the underlying causes for mental health difficulties.

While geared primarily towards paediatric trainees, all healthcare staff who care for children in the acute or community setting are welcome.

The included talks are: 

  • Eating Disorders
  • The Long-term Effects of developmental trauma
  • Acute Behavioural Disturbance
  • Mental Health Law

PMHA webinars on children’s and young people’s mental health

We are delighted to announce that, starting in June 2021, the PMHA is running a series of free webinars on children’s and young people’s mental health.

The webinars will run fortnightly on Monday evenings and will cover a range of topics relevant to the RCPCH training curriculum. Paediatric doctors, nurses and allied health professionals, as well as professionals from other medical specialties, are all welcome to attend.

We are excited to be collaborating with several different groups on this project. Half of our sessions will be aimed at general Paediatricians and we will be working with the very popular Thinking Together group to deliver some of these. The other half of our sessions will be run in conjunction with other subspecialty groups within the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH), covering particular mental health issues affecting their patient populations.

First Webinar – Monday 7th June, 7:30pm

Our first webinar, run in collaboration with the Thinking Together group, will take place at 7:30pm on Monday 7th June. The focus will be Medically Unexplained Symptoms, and it will be delivered by the wonderful Dr. Virginia Davies, Consultant Paediatric Liaison Psychiatrist at The Whittington Hospital. It’s sure to be an engaging and interesting session and we look forward to welcoming lots of you there.

How to build a brain: From infancy to adolescence – Part 1

This is the first part of a two-part webinar series that will provide an overview of both normal and abnormal brain development across a wide range of topics that are relevant to anyone working with infants, children and young people.

During this session, you will be able to:

  • Understand developmental ‘red flags’ 
  • Develop an insight into common neurological conditions that present in childhood, including movement disorders and childhood epilepsy 
  • Explore how cutting-edge neuroimaging techniques allow us to describe normal structural brain development 
  • Gain insights into current topics in neuroimaging 
  • Explore the MDT approach to managing children and adolescents with chronic neurodisability 
  • Gain insight into what features of neurodevelopment are important to parents and young people

Join a panel of clinicians and academics who are experts in their fields. Topics covered will focus on the MDT management of common neurological conditions in childhood, including emergency presentations. At this webinar, expand your understanding of the normal brain development as a window and to understand what happens when things go wrong.

The RCPCH’s Spring Meeting 2020 has become an Online Conference

The RCPCH’s Spring meeting, scheduled for April 2020, was regretfully cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But now the the meeting will go ahead online, with different sessions running between the 25 September and 13 November 2020.

PMHA Joint Workshop: ‘Difference and Self’

The PMHA had planned a joint workshop with the British Association for Paediatricians in Audiology, themed ‘Difference and self’.

This workshop will now be delivered in webinar form. Chaired by Dr Winfred Baddo and Dr Sheila Peters, this free, live online event will feature guest lectures and abstract presentations, with opportunities for delegates to ask questions.
